Happy Birthday Mason!!

This past weekend we got to celebrate Mason's first birthday at his Hungry, Hungry Catapillar birthday party!

Casey did a fantastic job with all the decorations and food! Mason had a wonderful time playing with friends, opening gifts, and eating cake! The hit of the party was a motorized four-wheeler just his size! He rode it until all the adults were too tired to help him steer anymore, and the battery died; he cried and cried when he had to get off! Overall, I'd say the party was a total success!!

Today is Mason's actual birthday! I can't believe it's been a year since I first held that tiny bundle in the hospital (while Mira, in utero, kicked him). It seems their relationship has continued in much the same pattern to this day! Ha! They act like siblings! =)

It was great being pregnant along side Casey, and I love watching Mira & Mason grow together! I hope we all get to be buddies for a long, long time!

So, Happy Birthday sweet boy! We love you!!

Bunco!!

We had our first night of Bunco this past Thursday! Kenny took care of Mira while I got to hang out with the girls! It was a lot of fun despite the fact that I didn't win any money! Oh, well...there's always next month! But, I did roll one Bunco - so, I got to wear the necklace for a couple of minutes...that was pretty exciting (even though it was an LSU atrocity - sorry, Lindsey!)! ;)

I didn't take any photos, so I'm going to send you to Lindsey's blog; she was our first hostess and snapped a couple of pics. She did a fabulous job with all the Bunco "stuff" - pink & black dice, pink Bunco pencils, pink score sheets - and all the food. I won't go into detail here since she describes it all so well, but I gotta say - the petit fours were adorable and delicious!

I can't wait for next month's Bunco (I believe it will be at Erinn's house in October). I don't host until January, but I'm sure time will fly!

The Amazing, Unbelievable, Super-Mira!!!

This may be a little boring for some - no pics. I just wanted to "jot" a few things down about Mira and all the awesome things she's doing these days...

  • She is 9 1/2 months old!
  • She still only has her two, bottom, front teeth...don't know where those upper teeth are! But, that's really okay, because she's already quite the biter, and I'm sincerely worried about the pain she is going to inflict once she has an upper and lower set of teeth. I've already apoligized to Casey in advance for anytime she ever bites Mason. I feel like it's inevitable...though I'll try my hardest to prevent it!!
  • She is still wearing size 3 diapers, but is moving up to 4's after these 3's are gone. She is wearing anywhere from 6 mo. to 9-12 mo. clothes.
  • If we are at home, she is probably in nothing but a t-shirt and diaper - it's cute, it's easy come diaper changing time (which comes so very often), it's comfy, and she can crawl without getting tangled up in clothes.
  • She is totally paci-free and has been for about 2-3 weeks now. This is something that I am really glad we did - we will SO thank ourselves for not having to deal with the "Paci Fairy" when she's a toddler! I've had experience weaning a 2 1/2 year old off a pacifier, and it was HORRIBLE! So, I'm proud of all three of us for working through it now and saving ourselves from heartache later. (disclaimer: I'm sure some people have had very pleasant experiences dealing with it in the toddler years, and I am not making any judgments, but I'd rather not risk it!)
  • She is taking all her naps in her crib, and I've disassembled the swing. This is HUGE since it was the go-to at nap time.
  • She is sleeping through the night most nights, usually waking up some time between 5:30 and 6:30. Every once in a while, she'll wake up at 4 am and want a shot of formula before going back to sleep.
  • She claps her hands and waves "hello" and "bye bye." We are also very close to "blowing kisses" which I'm so very excited about!!
  • She can put something "in" something else (blocks in a bucket, for example).
  • She's just begining to use her little pointer finger...or you could call it her "poker finger" since she's usually trying to poke that little finger into someone's mouth or nose or eyeball!
  • She is crawling like a mad woman all over the place - she is very fast and has learned that what she thought were boundaries are, in fact, not boundaries at all!! Now she knows that she can come find us if she wants us rather than sit and cry for us to come to her.
  • She is ever-curious about everything around her and often cranes her neck and/or stands on her tip-toes to see what's going on (it's the cutest!).
  • She loves the water whether it is 2 inches in a tub, pouring from a faucet, in a swimming pool, or in a cup that she can drink out of! She loves...no...LOVES to splash (and is very good at it).
  • She has climbed all the way to the top of our staircase several times now.
  • She has stood all by herself for up to 10 seconds! But, now she's on to me and twists around to grab me if I start to let go of her. We have to really distract her to get her to do it (usually, it's watching the dogs play-wrestle that grabs her attention well enough). She just gets a little nervous once she realizes she's doing it all by herself.
  • She is a master at cruising along furniture, people, Jeter & Shatzie - you name it! She can go from one to the other without hesitating, she can twist and turn around, she can stoop and pick things up, she can sit down in a controlled manner and then stand right back up.
  • She is starting to make an obvious effort of mimicking us in tone, pitch, and sound! No words just yet, except for "mama" and "daddy" which she is using on the right person more and more often.
  • She still won't eat any kind of wet or squishy chunk of food like diced apples or carrots, peas, etc., but she loves any kind of dry food such as crackers, puffs, yogurt drops, etc. that she can feed herself.
  • She loves green beans and zucchini. She doesn't have much of a sweet tooth (didn't get that from her Mommy, I suppose - thank goodness!).
  • She is drinking a 6 ounce bottle of formula 4 times a day and eats three solid meals a day.
  • She hates being laid down for a diaper change and usually fusses the whole time unless you make a complete spectacle of yourself in order to entertain and distract her. Oddly, she doesn't fuss at all when I change her in the car; I either lay her in the passenger floorboard (she's almost gotten too big for this) or in the back cargo space if it's clear (we drive a Ford Escape).
  • She is very tentative in new situations or around new people. She likes to sit back, watch, and analyze the situation rather than diving right into the action. This is very apparent at Gymboree where she has this huge, safe space to crawl all over and play in, but she mostly sits very still and stares at the other babies for the majority of the time. She does play and crawl - just not as much as she does at home. It's so fun to see her personality grow and show itself!
  • She is a Momma's Girl. She clings to me and cries for me and throws herself at me if someone else is holding her and I get sort of close. I suppose this is to be expected since we are together all day, everyday! =) I know that one day it won't be all about Mommy anymore...eventually, she will realize that Daddy is way more fun and will want to follow him around everywhere. And he will let her. So, I shall revel and enjoy my Momma's Girl for now. She has started the gym nursery, and so she is (we are) getting some practice at being separated. I think she's doing better than me...I miss her terribly when I'm away from her (and I'm only about 40 ft away!). I'll get better. I hope.

She melts our hearts with her giggles and grins and big open mouth kisses!! We sing, we dance, we make total fools of ourselves in hopes of getting the slightest show of approval! We must be in love!

Birthday Pool Parties

This weekend was a busy one in Fairfield where we went to two different birthday pool parties! First, we celebrated my niece, Avi's, 8th birthday. I can't believe she's already so old!!

Her Mommy, Coco, made the cake which was covered in sharks, life preservers, and a buoy! I got to help a little - putting stripes on life preservers, mouths on sharks, sugaring the buoy, and I did Avi's name!

Mira had fun spending time with all the family. Here she is with her Aunt Coco.

Mira loves the water and was so content bobbing along in her float that she fell asleep! Listen to the noise in the background - she can sleep through that, but not through the night!!! Maybe we should get her a water bed...(do they still make those?). I'm sure that would be approved by the APA...right?

After Avi's party, we got back into cake decorating mode. I got to help Coco with her second cake of the day - a big fish cake!
Then we were off to party #2!! This was a birthday party for a friend's little boy. More swimming and more sugar...yay!!! We had a great time playing "water volleyball" and Kenny and my brother did some "Wipe Out" stunts on the slide.
Kenny spent most of the day horsing around with my nieces - having splash wars, throwing them around, and otherwise starting mischief - they loved it! This is a rare moment of peace and cooperation; Olivia and Kenny must have made some kind of pact.

Mira stayed awake this time and enjoyed riding "Shamu" (no worries - Kenny is hiding behind the whale and has a hand on her). Later, she got in another float and stayed there perfectly happy for about two hours!! The adults got tired and hungry before she did, so we finally had to pull her out of her floaty and go eat!

On Sunday, we had a more restful day at the house. After a scrumptious breakfast of homemade waffles and butter pecan apples, Aunt Coco, Olivia, and Mira played hairdresser. Olivia did Coco's hair and Coco did Mira's hair - they both looked like total rock stars!

But, all this fun finally took its toll...Mira crashed while sitting up in my lap (she has to be REALLY tired to do this!). She also slept the entire drive home which she has NEVER done!!

We had so much fun (and so much sugar)!! =)

A couple of random tidbits...

Mira's hair has finally gotten so long that it falls in her eyes, so she is often seen sporting a bow these days. I know many baby girls are wearing giant bows from the day they leave the hospital, but this is a first for Mirabelle.

She doesn't seem to mind either way, but smiles so big when she sees herself in the mirror when she has one in her hair! This is a picture of the first day she wore a bow - she looks awfully proud! =)

Mira doesn't watch a whole lot of television. We haven't started Baby Einstein videos or any of that yet. But, I often mention how much Mira loves Jeopardy. We usually start a DVR-ed show when I give her her afternoon bottle, and then we watch the rest while she plays in the livingroom (fast forwarding through all the commercials). She loves Alex, and she always whips her head around to see the T.V. when she hears the "Daily Double" sound and at the end when the "Think Music" comes on. It cracks me up - she often claps when the audience claps, too. =) Here she is watching her favorite game show host:

9 Month Well Baby Check-Up

Mira was a champ today at the doctor's office. In usual fashion, I was fully prepared to bawl my eyes out since a CBC is routine for the 9 month visit (no shots, though - yay!). I knew she would scream in horror and cry huge crocodile tears once they pricked her little finger and started milking it for blood. I was on the verge of tears just waiting for our turn in the lab...

Mira was sitting infront of me on a desk (blocking my view of the procedure) looking at a stack of stickers so calmly that I was secretly cursing the nurse for not hurrying up and starting already! I craned my neck to see what the hold-up was and, to my surprise, saw a tube already half-full of my daughter's blood!

She didn't even bat an eye!! Not one single tear! Nothing! No grimace! No pout! NOTHING!!

I was shocked!! Very relieved, but SHOCKED!

We chatted about Mira's crawling, cruising, and standing (for 1-2 seconds), and after she stood for Dr. Crittell holding only one of her hands for balance, Dr. Crittell was convinced that Mira will be walking early - before her 1st birthday. Oh boy! :

She now weighs 19 pounds 12 ounces and is 26 1/2 inches long! Her blood work came back perfectly normal, so she is, as always, PERFECT! =)

Her next Well Baby Check-Up is in 3 months on her birthday, and she gets 3 shots! Poor baby...but, it just worked out that that was the best day for the appointment. Oh well, we'll make it up to her the rest of the day, I'm sure!!

We're so happy to have such a beautiful, healthy, happy baby girl - couldn't wish for anything more!!!

Happy Birthday to Kenny!!

Kenny's birthday weekend started when the Admin group surprised Kenny with balloons, a card, and a sweet "Daddy's Girl" frame - how nice!

Friday was a half-day - it was TCD's annual office party at the LA Downs race track. We had fun losing a few dollars on the ponies. Mira is looking through the program and deciding on her next bet.

When we got home, Kenny had a package on the front porch. The Hughes' sent homemade chocolate butterscotch pecan cupcakes and beautiful, original artworks! The artwork arrived intact...can't say as much about the cupcakes. But, they were still delicious!! Kenny is stuffing his mouth here, not gagging - just in case it isn't clear...we had polished these babies off by Saturday night!

Mira and I made Kenny a surprise - homemade carrot cake with cream cheese icing! He's been wanting some for months! I made sure and put all 28 candles on there! Hope your wish comes true, Sweetie! Mira is helping and practicing for her birthday which is coming soon!

On Saturday, our friend April, came over and hung out with Mira while Kenny and I went to the Horseshoe to celebrate his birthday together. We were all pumped about our first visit to the casino since we moved out here!

We were both looking forward to playing blackjack, but ended up only playing three hands. I lost all three - Kenny won 2 out of the 3 rounds, so he did pretty good there. We played a lot of roulette; it was fun learning all the different ways to place a bet and the odds of different bets. Fun, but I still lost all but $10 of my money.

I blew the last $10 on slots which was the most boring, mindless way I have ever spent $10. Losing it in the washing machine would have been more thought-provoking!! Losing it in a vending machine would have been more thrilling! Accidentally dropping it into a shredder would have been more interesting! Ugh! Slots are SO boring and such a waste of time as far as I'm concerned!!!!

Kenny did a little better than I did - he still had about $30 or $40 left by the time I ran out of money completely. Afterwards, we headed over to the Boardwalk and grabbed a pretzel and lemonade at Auntie Ann's - YUM!!

It was a lot of fun hanging out with my BFF while Mira was playing happily and napping soundly at home. =)

Just when Kenny might have thought all the birthday celebrations were over...the office threw him and Matthew a surprise party today! The CFO and President's birthdays are only a few days apart - can you believe they're both only 28?

They both got these beautifully framed photos of the first well drilled in TCD's AMI. They really liked the gifts and were totally surprised about the party. Kenny found out a little earlier than planned, but was surprised when he did find out! Matthew was surprised when he was supposed to be. (Good job, Matthew)
Happy 28th Sweetie!! I hope it was a good one!

August Supper Club

Kenny & I hosted Supper Club at our house this month. We decided to do a potato and salad bar with all the trimmings.

It seemed a little loud and chaotic to me, but maybe that was because I had a cranky 8 1/2 month old clinging to me for most of the night!!?

Here is the Baby Tornado that swept through our living room! =)

Bennett discovered the leather loop on our coffee table...well, just so happens that that is Mira's favorite thing to chew on!! A mini battle ensued...
Maddie was so super-sweet and content all night!

It was time to get our traditional shot of all the Supper Club babies together - it was quite the circus this month since most of them are crawling now!! Kenny threw Mira down there and ran!
Parents dash in and out of the shot trying to keep babies in their spots...
Look at Bennett - he's about to make a break for it! Maddie and Georgia are too cute checking each other out.

Most of them are looking in this one - you should see the line of parents opposite of them making a huge spectacle: clapping, waving, hooting, etc!! No wonder the babies are looking at us like we're a bunch of crazies - they were stunned for a second! =)
Mira loses it and Bennett is out of there!! Look at sweet Mason sitting like he's suppose to - eyes on the camera!

Well, it was fun despite the noise and utter chaos! Can't imagine the tricks we'll have to pull to get them (and keep them) together next month!!!

5+ Years and Still Silly in Love!!

Well, after uploading all those pics and writing captions...I forgot to share how Kenny and I (& Mira) celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary!

We have always taken a trip the week of our anniversary and we always go out for a special dinner on the 30th - Kenny picks the restaurant and it's a secret until we arrive!

Well, this year, it wasn't a secret, but it was very special! We ate at Blue Mesa - "our" restaurant! Kenny took me there for our very first date. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. We announced our pregnancy to Sheila & Jim there (Kenny's parents). And so, it seemed a great place to celebrate our first anniversary with our newly improved family!

It was delicious, as always! We started with their delicious tortilla chips and sweet potato chips with queso. Then Kenny & I both had the Painted Desert Soup (half black bean soup, half corn chowder) - YUM!!! I had black bean and cheese nachos and he had goat cheese enchiladas! We both had amazing margaritas, too!!

Mira did pretty good considering it was getting pretty late and she was quite worn out! Thankfully, we had a small, cozy dining room all to ourselves! Since Blue Mesa does not have our idea of great desserts (mostly flan - ick!), we decided to find dessert somewhere else and take it back to the hotel to enjoy after Mira was down for the night. We stopped by a Corner Bakery on the way back, and I ran in and got us a mini chocolate bundt and a peanut butter whoopee pie (Kenny is a pb fanatic).

There was a pull-out sofa that we used as Mira's "crib" for the week - worked out great! So, after putting her down for the night, Kenny and I turned on a low lamp and dove into the desserts together! We were so stuffed from dinner, and even more stuffed after we cleaned our dessert plate!

With our bellies over-full and feeling giddy from all the sugar, we laid down on the bed and began to reminisce about the past 5 (almost 6) years that we've been together. We laughed until our stomachs ached, but quietly - trying not to wake Mira! We've had so many crazy adventures together! I realized we should document it all as best we can before we can't remember it all or we're not here to tell it! That's a BIG project...

Well, we weren't quiet enough because during one laughing fit, we hear a tiny peep out of our darling daughter. We look over (still chuckling a bit) and she has rolled over and gotten up on all fours to stare at us with this look of severe castigation! We couldn't help ourselves, being in such a state of the giggles, and laughed louder when we saw her sweet little face in such a scolding expression - this made her drop her precious head and cry... =(

So, of course, our smiles got flipped upside down, and we both hopped up in a flash and cuddled her and soothed her - convinced her we would put a lid on it and go to bed ASAP. She went happily back to sleep in no time. =)

We had a lot of fun and felt like we really got to celebrate "Us" even with an 8 month old in tow! Of course, we look forward to having our couple's trip back next year, but it felt right to have Mira there for this one, and she brought a lot of fun and joy to the trip.

Kenny's already talking Paris for next year's trip...oh, geez!

A Week in DFW

We had tons of fun in DFW! We visited all our old favorite hang-outs - introducing Mira to the DFW we know and love! We went to the Aquarium, the Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, Central Market, and did a ton of eating and shopping! Mira really worked at perfecting four fun activities: crawling, clapping, splashing, and waving!

I won't write too much - mostly for lack of time! But here are a few pics from the week:

Dallas World Aquarium - Mira really loved watching the fish and trying to grab them. Can we say "future diver?" =)

Nice Kitty...Mira is practicing her wave while a lazy jaguar lounges behind her. She's been waving at people left and right (totally un-prompted) for the past few days. I think it's adorable when she waves at other babies, but it's the cutest when she waves at her own reflection in the mirror!!

Hanging out at the hotel - Mira is "getting" me (she thinks this is hilarious)! I took a large bedsheet to lay down, so she would have a place to crawl around and play.
A portrait with the gorillas at the Fort Worth Zoo.
This orangutang was totally working the camera!!! Look at him pose - I took a lot of shots (way more than I'm posting)!!!
I was enthralled!!
Work it! Work it!!
...and Vogue!

Daddy points out the cheetah so Mira is sure to see!
One of our faves...the meerkats.
Headed to the pool - can't wait!! Who's got Daddy wrapped around her little finger??
Daddy is so silly - he goes under the water then comes up shaking and splashing!! Makes me laugh every time! I really perfected my splashing technique this week - soaked Mommy, Daddy, and myself!!! What fun!!!
Sitting with Mommy in the Japanese Garden at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.
Um...Mommy....I don't know about this reflection pool thing...you're close, right?? (Of course, I am - great cropping job!)
Feeding the koi.
Kenny got a great shot of this crane that hangs out at the gardens!
Mira looks so big standing up there all by herself - again, I am very, very close!
Such a cutie! She has to wear shoes more often now, because she wants to be down and standing! Looks like such a big girl!
Yay for the Rangers!! Or, maybe it's "Yay for Daddy!" Anyways, she was clapping up a storm all week and loved when everyone in the crowd would start clapping - as if she had started this huge reaction!
Just hand over the water bottle and everybody will have a good time. She was really good at the game - enjoyed the crowd and the noise and even the fireworks! Notice how bright the sky is in the background...
Just a little while later, a huge storm rolled in and the sky turned black! The wind was blowing hard and thunder and lightning were headed our way! We ended up leaving in the 6th inning and making it to the car right as big raindrops started crashing down!!

Not sure about this guy...a frog at the Rainforest Cafe.

A Dress for My Baby Doll!

So, I found this fabric and just had to make something out of it!! I ended up deciding to try my hand at making a dress!

I had never done buttonholes before - they were hard and turned out functional but ugly!! Otherwise, I think it turned out pretty cute, but a bit large for my little Peanut!! She was happy to model it anyways...

Farewell to Nursing

**WARNING - This is a long (I'm talking l....o.....n....g) entry and there is a lot of 'nipple talk' in this passage, so if you can't handle it - skip this one!! This one's really more for me - like therapy! ;) **

Well, we've had a long, hard road when it comes to nursing...

My nearest and dearest know that I have struggled with it since before Mira was even born! I had flat/inverted nipples and had to wear shells for about 6 weeks prior to her due date. This was supposed to help break the adhesions and allow the nipple to come out, so Mira could latch on properly.

I remember being so thrilled the day I first started leaking (before Mira was born) - I was so relieved to know "they work!" I texted my bf, Erika, with something along the lines of "yea! i'm leaking!" She thought I meant my water had broke and was so excited that I was going into labor! But I think that was like 4 or 5 weeks early, so it wouldn't have been that great afterall!

Anyways, I was so excited and nervous about nursing. I was simply afraid I wouldn't be able to do it, or that Mira wouldn't want to or be able to.

Our very first nursing session in the hospital after she was born was pretty rocky. I was on the brink of blacking out/throwing up anytime they elevated me enough to nurse (apparently, I lost a lot of blood during labor). I was too out of it and weak to hold her by myself, and my nipples were still not cooperating! Mira was such a tropper from day one! She was very persistent and tried to latch on over and over again. I'm so glad she didn't give up!!

I didn't want to use a shield, but the nurse pleaded with me to try it since we were having no luck without it, and I was getting pretty frustrated. I agreed because I felt the alternative was to give her a bottle, so I thought I'd try all the tricks before going to formula.

So, the second time, I tried the shield, and it worked like a charm. Mira latched on and ate really well for a few minutes before I had to practically throw her at Kenny because I felt like I was going to pass out and I was afraid I was going to drop her!

The nurse took her back to the nursery, and I fell into a deep sleep. I remember waking up and looking at the clock, groggily wondering how long it had been since she had eaten. I finally got my head together enough to do the math - it had been about 6 hours! I called for the nurse, furiuos that they had let me sleep while my baby went hungry!! Obviously, I wasn't quite "with it" yet...

Of course, they had not let her go hungry. They had used a gavage and fed her formula while I slept. I wanted to be upset with them for taking this liberty, but it just made too much sense. I was too tired and weak to nurse more than a couple of minutes, so it was better that I get some rest and be ready to really sit up and hold her and nurse. I did feel much better after having a few hours of sleep, and since they used a gavage instead of a bottle/nipple, I didn't have to worry about "nipple confusion" (this term cracks Kenny up which annoys the mess out of me!).

Well, as it turns out, Kenny was listening when I ranted and lectured about the hysterical "nipple confusion" because he fought the nurse over giving Mira a bottle that night. He was our Knight in Shining Armor, putting his foot down and refused to let the nurse give her that nipple! I only just found this out now after all these months!! He says, "I thought I told you..." =)

So, from there we were off and running! At home, I would get all set up in the big chair in our bedroom. I would get the Boppy situated, have the nipple shield ready, foot stool in place, get her in the perfect position, and off we went!

Wow. Was that a pain in the rear! What a fuss!

And, in the begining, I was often nursing every hour on the hour! And she would easily nurse for 45 minutes to an hour...you do the math!!! She would fall asleep instantly and I would fight with her to try and wake her up - this was impossible! I stroked her lips, gently pinched her ear lobes, tickled her feet, and even undressed her - nothing. If she was asleep, she was asleep.

Throughout our time nursing, I went through every troublespot there is - starting with the inverted/flat nipples, then on to engoregment, mastitis, blocked ducts, infected ducts, cracked nipples, and, best of all, bleeding nipples. That was a scary moment when I looked down at her after un-latching and saw blood all over her mouth! I was so relieved to figure out that it was coming from me and not her! It was the first of many occassions.

I've had the embarassing experience of leaking puddles of milk in public - soaked straight through pad, bra, and shirt! It would literally be dripping down my stomach at times! No worries of low milk supply!!

I remember the frustration of trying to find a decent place to nurse when in public...the frustrations of always having to be the one to feed her whether I was in the middle of a meal, a tour, or trying on clothes at the mall.

The fact that she refused to be on any kind of schedule made it so hard to plan anything, plus she continued to nurse every couple of hours up until at least 5 months - that didn't leave a lot of time to get things done before I'd have to "whip it out" again.

But, now for the brighter side...

We did eventually get much more relaxed about the whole thing - no Boppy, no foot stool. Instead, I found that sitting Indian-style was a much easier position for us. I learned the best spots for nursing while out and about, and Mira started to get a little more focused. She would eat and be done rather than falling asleep everytime, and we did get to where she would go a little longer between feedings.

I am so glad that we were able to nurse. I say "we" because if Mira had been passive about it in the begining, I probably would have ended up going to formula from the start. And, if Kenny hadn't been so supportive and encouraging, I probably could have convinced myself that it wasn't worth the trouble, pain, or inconvenience. Sheila and Coco were both endless sources of praise and encouragement as well. Our lactation consultant was a fountain of information and helpful advice. So, it sort of took a team to make it work!

I did have a moment of great pride one day when I realized how beautifully and healthily she was growing on nothing but what I was giving her from my own body! It makes you respect your body a little more.

And, I did have moments of intense closeness with her. So many hours that I spent nursing, I was able to just sit and stare at her while she was perfectly serene. I loved getting to soak her all in!

She usually had her eyes closed while nursing. She often made Kenny & I laugh with her grunts and moans (of total bliss, I assumed)! She would frequently slurp and smack (I say she gets this from her Daddy). And her hands....ahhh, her hands! She would melt my heart and make me laugh until I cried with the way she would move her hands. Often, she would put one hand to her forehead as if she had great troubles to sort out. Sometimes, she would grab hold to whatever she could get her hands on (bra, blouse, breast!), or pinch the fire out of me! Other times, she would ever so gently brush her tiny little fingertips over my skin in a fluttery caress or put her whole arm around my breast as if to hug it as close as possible to her.

She loved to nurse. She would nurse all day if I let her, and she nursed to sleep every night. So, naturally, I cringed at the thought of having to wean her, especially the night feeding. I figured it would involve a lot of tears - maybe more from me than her! I let her taste formula when she was 4 months old - right before she was starting solids -, and she hated it! This made me even more anxious...

So, imagine my surprise when it was the easiest milestone yet (for her)! I decided to try formula again around 7 months (after she had been eating solids and trying lots of new flavors/textures for a few months), and she drank it down like she'd been drinking it all her life!

I started with one bottle here or there...then went to every other feeding being a bottle (at this point, she started losing interest in nursing - she was too distracted)...then giving her formula all day but nursing her before bed, first thing in the morning and during the night if she woke up hungry...to only nursing during the night...and FINALLY (right about 8 months) no nursing at all!

July 20, 2009 (8 days ago) was the last time I nursed - it was in the wee hours of a Monday morning. I nursed her while we slept in our bed. I was a little sad when I realized it would be the last time - even though it hurt like crazy, and I was ready to be done with the pain!

I know for a fact that it has been harder on me than her. I don't think it has fazed her even a tiny, tiny amount. But, me....well, I guess, to my surprise, I'm a teensy bit sad.

I don't miss the actual nursing so much, but I am sad about closing a chapter (but looking forward to opening so many new ones). I'm sad (and so, so excited) about her growing more and more independent every day. I'm sad (and happy, too) that she no longer fits across my lap.

So, farewell to sore breasts & bleeding nipples. Au revoir breast pump & nipple shields. So long milk-soaked blouses. Adios nursing bras and pads! And, good-bye to my newborn baby girl who, no matter what, all it took to sooth her was me.... =(

Now, I guess I get to re-introduce myself to "real" bras and dresses (most are impossible to nurse in!). Howdy to washing a million bottles and nipples every day! Aloha to breasts that don't make me wince just by looking at them! And hello to a more independent, smarter, more giggly, more active, and stronger, baby girl who will always be able to find comfort in her Mommy's arms.

I look forward to the chapters we are opening now - she's crawling and cruising. Being so mobile allows her to get where she wants to be, and it is nice and reassuring when it is you that she wants to be close to. She is so full of joy - she loves to laugh and play games. It won't be long before she is saying her first words - this will be more like opening a collection of books as opposed to a chapter!

This is why parenting is always so bitter-sweet; chapters open and close all the time. It's a good thing that there's not too much time to sit and pout about the things you'll miss, because life with a growing child is full of so many new exciting things everyday!

To Mira: I love you so much, and I hope you know that no matter how much I complain or joke about nursing, I'm so glad things worked out, and I was able to do that for you. My only regret is that my pain and your waning interest kept us from lasting the whole year. But, I would do it again in a heartbeat because you are so worth it! You are always worth it!

Crawling!!!

So, Mira is officially crawling now! She's been taking a "step" or two here and there for the past week or so, but on Sunday, she finally went the distance!

I didn't have the best of luck catching her in action. Her longest runs weren't caught on video. But, here is a little montage of some sweet crawling action to tide you all over until we can get her on film going a good length.

As usual, she's polished her skills quite a bit in the past 24 hours, so she is already much smoother and stops less often. I'll keep the camcorder on the tripod at all times tomorrow... ;)

We may or may not go to Gymboree tomorrow. We won't be in town on Friday for our regular class, but I'm not sure if I want to go tomorrow. I have a lot to do around the house and need to get things ready for our trip. On the other hand, it would be a great chance for Mira to hone her new skill!!
